13 posters related to EndoFLIP technology to be presented at DDW 2013 Orlando, FL May 18-21, 2013

15th April 2013

This year will see 13 posters related to EndoFLIP technology being presented at Digestive Disease Week (DDW) to be held in Orlando, FL from 18-21st of May 2013. Among the posters are a series of studies from Galway University Hospital describing typical measurements of the gastroesophageal junction (GEJ) during laparoscopic Nissen Fundoplication GERD surgery, and of more importance, the first evidence of the degree of wrap tightness which is associated with post-operative symptoms which are common after this procedure. This early data is suggestive of a minimum stoma diameter of 6.5mm inside the junction, which, if exceeded, may lead to reduced post-operative morbidity in the early post-operative phase. Another poster describes the first use of EndoFLIP to measure the pylorus during pyloromyotomy. Whereas to date EndoFLIP has been largely used for measurement of the GEJ, some authors are now looking at using EndoFLIP during surgical or endoscopic procedures on the pylorus. A further series of posters from Northwestern University describes this centre's ongoing pioneering work on the use of EndoFLIP to better characterise the esophagus in patients with eosiniphilic esophagitis (EoE), a rapidly growing disorder, sometimes known as "asthma of the esophagus". A key question that arises with newer modalities of minimally invasive GERD surgery techniques, is whether the GEJ is moderately or severely mechanically impaired. Can EndoFLIP be used to select which patients will respond to a transoral procedure such as Esophyx (Endogastric Solutions Inc.), or a more minimally invasive laparoscopic procedure such as Linx (Torax Medical Inc.), as distinct from which patients will require a full laparoscopic fundoplication? A poster from Smeets et al. presents data from a 42 patient study addressing this question for the transoral Esophyx procedure. The following is a complete list of the 13 posters to be presented.
