5 new papers utilizing EndoFLIP Technology published from December 2015 to January 2016

4th February 2016

Five new papers have been recently published which describe different uses of EndoFLIP technology.

The first paper Intraoperative Assessment of Esophagogastric Junction Distensibility During Laparoscopic Heller Myotomy presents intra-operative FLIP measurement data on 14 patients who underwent Heller Myotomy with Dor Fundopliction. In the series, 9 patients had previously been treated with either dilation or Botox treatment. 7 patients in the series underwent robotic assisted surgery. The second paper Evaluation of the pylorus with concurrent intraluminal pressure and EndoFLIP in patients with nausea and vomiting by Snape et al is a 114 patient study which demonstrated significant decrease in pyloric distensibility in patients with gastric retention compared with patients with normal gastric retention. In a similar vein to the work of Gourcerol et al published in 2015, the authors comment that only a percentage of patients with delayed gastric emptying have decreased distensibility of the pylorus, and that therapy of gastroparesis may need to be tailored to the underlying cause of the disturbance. The third paper Effects of Metoclopramide on Esophageal Motor Activity and Esophagogastric Junction Compliance in Healthy Volunteers by Mikami et al used EndoFLIP to assess the effect of a prokinetic drug, Metoclopramide, on GEJ distensibility. An interesting finding in this study was that Metoclopramide was not found to alter GEJ distensibility. This is in contrast to the effect of another prokinetic drug, Mosapride, where a previous study by the authors showed GEJ distensibility was altered (both studies were conducted using healthy volunteers). The fourth paper Esophagogastric junction distensibility measurements during hydraulic dilation therapy in achalasia patients by Kappelle et al. presents a review of the current literature on EndoFLIP used with EsoFLIP balloon dilation technology. The fifth paper Do EndoFLIP assessments of anal sphincter distensibility provide more information on patients with fecal incontinence than high-resolution anal manometry? by Gourcerol et al is the first paper to compare and contrast anorectal manometry with EndoFLIP for assessment of anal sphincters. On the basis of this 74 patient study, the authors concluded that the ability of distensibility to discriminate between Fecal Incontinence patients and healthy subjects was significantly better than anal pressure.
